Life Change Team 2008:  North Africagroup pic
by Tim Chambers, Team Leader

Twelve people representing seven Newfrontiers-USA churches spent a little over a week in North Africa in May 2008. We were able to get a broad glimpse of the work God is doing in the areas we visited. We met people in big cities and coastal towns, isolated deserts and mountain villages. We had conversations with workers pioneering alone, workers who are part of missionary teams, and workers joined to the local church.

We dove into the culture, staying in the homes of North Africans and taking lessons in elementary Arabic. A highlight of the trip was our opportunity to worship with the local believers. In a group of about thirty, four languages were represented. We sang songs of worship in Arabic, Spanish, French, and English.

Team members grew in our ability to relate to people from other cultures – particularly to people from the Islamic world. We are also better equipped to make friends across all kinds of cultural barriers, which will be important as we build churches that put the beauty of ethnic and cultural diversity on display.

One of our team’s primary goals was to be a blessing to the local believers. Just before we left, some of our friends there spoke with considerable emotion about their love for us and the encouragement God brought them through our visit. This was pretty humbling. Our team felt that we were the ones who were honored and blessed.

uphill HikeOur friends in North Africa have asked us to pray for more church planters, for the health of the churches, for their protection, and for their contacts and friends to become increasingly open to the gospel. There are massive un-reached people groups in this nation. There are cities of more than a million that may have less than 100 native Christians. But in the middle of this, there are evangelists and pastors and church planters hard at work. They consistently asked us to pray for them to receive more of the Holy Spirit and his gifts. They want to see miracles of healing and words of knowledge to open hearts and demonstrate the Lordship of Jesus.

               Testimonies from Team Members

  • “Those ten days were the most rich, fun, eye-opening, impacting days of my life. I spent time with an amazing team of people, and we were able to connect with more amazing people of a completely different culture. I was not ready to leave when we did! Now I'm hoping and praying to go back again, and for a longer period of time.”

  • "While there, God taught me that He did not want to change my circumstances, he wanted to change me. I responded, ‘Here I am God! Change me and use me.’ When I did that God implanted a vision in me to see the nations come to Jesus, to see God’s church grow, and to see God’s Kingdom established on earth.”

  • “On the Life Change Team, I received fresh zeal to see the gospel transform culture in my own town. I’m ready to call people to a radical commitment to Jesus. He is the savior of the whole world. He is the hope of every culture. The culture of North Africa is rich and beautiful but also seriously messed up. The gospel has the power to transform people and to redeem culture.”
  • “When are we going back? It was a great experience. I only wish that it would have been longer.”
